AISM – Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association, Genoa (2023)
Autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation is considered a possible therapy for autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Currently, autologous transplantation of haematopoietic cells is an established medical practice in the fields of haematology and oncology, however, years of study and experimental applications were required for it to become a potential treatment for MS.
Today, Professor Matilde Inglese is coordinating a study in this field, which promises to write a very important chapter in the history of the fight against the disease. The study is expected to confirm haematopoietic stem cell transplantation as a valid therapeutic option for people with rapidly worsening forms of multiple sclerosis that do not respond to traditional treatments.
Thanks to the Canali Foundation, a whole year of blood tests will be financed to detect the amount of neurofilaments in the blood of treated patients, which are important biomarkers of disease progression or improvement.
